July 2020 Monthly Ride Report Recap

As some attractions reopen, seven (7) cases were reported, plus there was coverage of one case from a prior period not previously recapped.

4 July A tragic fatal rider ejection from “Formula 1”, a roller coaster at Parc Saint-Paul in France. Reports described the injured rider as being ejected apparently by ride forces.

6 July A worker at Family Park in France was fatally struck by “Gold Rush”, a roller coaster, having reportedly encroached within the enclosure while the train was in motion.

10 July A child was found drowned at Chapparal Campground Splash Waterpark in US Wisconsin. Reports do not indicate which area of the waterpark was involved (pool, slide, wave pool, or other attraction). Report | Report

14 July A woman had a loss of consciousness at an unspecified waterslide at Land of Make Believe, US New Jersey. The report mentions possible head injury and loss of use of legs, but does not clarify whether this was a case of slide forces producing unintended bodily motion, or a medical occurrence while on the slide. While the patron was reportedly airlifted to hospital, it is unclear if she required admission.

14 July Six children reportedly exhibited reactions to apparent chemical exposure at a splash pad at Mission Leisure Centre in Canada BC, with one treated at hospital and others cared for onsite by paramedics. The report suggests intentional rather than accidental contamination of the water supply but no surveillance is available to clarify the suspected vandalism. Update reports substance suspected to be bear spray.

19 July An adult male guest was unconscious in or around a pool at Sandcastle Park in US PA. Reports indicated variously that he collapsed after exiting, or was unconscious when removed from the pool. Later reports indicated that he had since died. Additional report | report

26 July A 13 year old boy was fatally injured on falling from a ride in Jordan. Nothing else was reported: where it occurred, whether fixed-site or mobile ride operator, what type of ride, what stage of the ride, how the rider left the ride. Reporters can use the RRRR reporting template to avoid incomplete stories.

Reports from prior period

Also reported in July, a claim originating from July 2018, involving reported misoperation of “Storm Runner”, a launched roller coaster at Hersheypark in US PA. The claim alleges the restraints were raised and the train was about to launch, when the nine-year-old rider leapt from the seat in time to avoid launching with an open restraint device.

Summary reports

Also, Florida theme park 2020 2nd quarterly report was published. Similar to the RRRR 2020 2Q, most attraction operations were closed for all or part and fewer injuries were reported. One case was reported of a nine-year-old boy who was found unresponsive at a trap-door waterslide at Universal’s Volcano Bay in June 2020.
